My First REAL Wedding!!!

...sort of. It's actually a dummy cake. The bottom two tiers are styrafoam then fondanted and decorated as usual but the top tier is actually cake so that the bride and groom can do the ceremonial "cake cutting". I was pretty happy with it. I'm glad it was a dummy cake because I would have been stressed out of my mind worrying about it melting in that 95 degree weather! Sorry about the bad photography. I was frazzled and didn't check the pictures that my Jacob took. Hopefully I can get a better pic from the photographer later. I'm just so glad it's over!

Costco Cakes

If you're not feeling up to baking the cake yourself, just run to your neighborhood Costco. Make sure you specify that you want no decorations on the cake. They always leave a white border around the cake that you can scrape off and color to match the cake. My friend has hit me up for two years in a row to do these cakes for school events. The first was a Mother/Son pirate night and this one was for a Father/Son BMX night. I didn't have much time to be creative or decorate the cakes, so this is the result. It just goes to show you what you can do in a pinch to make it a little more special. The Wheels of Freestyle Cake was the logo for the company that did they bike show that night. Anyway, she was happy and they only took me a couple hours to do all three of them. It's a great option.

My First Wedding!

I did our cousin Rob's cake for his open house in Spanish Fork this past week. I'm so glad that it was so casual. I probably would have been 5 x's as nervous if it wasn't. The only direction that I was given was that the colors were royal blue and sage and it was to be a cupcake tower so here is the result.
Thank goodness that Ashley was visiting me and was here to help me! I don't think I could have done it without her help! We had to make 100 flowers to go on top of the cupcakes. Since there were two colors in each flower, that meant that we had to cut out 200 flowers and then assemble them! We also had to cut out 200 leaves. Ashley did just about did all the flowers and leaves by herself. The top cake was fun to do the piping on. I've been wanting to try this design for a long time. I was happy with it...until during transport, the buttercream started melting and creating air pockets in the cake. We had to poke a hole on the top and let the air out, then cover it back up with a fondant flower. It also started to melt the dam for the filling so that is why you will notice it being a bit lumpy in the middle. The picture makes it look worse than it is though.
My only complaint was the crude cupcake stand. The seperators were too high. I need to cut them down a couple inches. Actually, I am making a new cupcake stand that will look like this:

It's fun to put a new picture in your Portfolio

Except I can't seem to get decent pictures of my cakes. I don't know what sort of dark forces are out there trying to keep me from taking these pictures but it happens every time. The thing is I had my camera right there with me when I finished setting up and all the lights were still up. Sure enough I ran out of there with my XD card empty. Shhheeesh! It's so frustrating. Anyway this is what I got after I went back to the reception and attempted to take a picture with low lights. This is how bad the light was, the roses on the cake are hot pink, not red. Then I had to hunt down a cupcake and take a picture of it on a piano bench in the other room. Pitiful I know! Well I have a few other cakes to post but won't get to it until I get better pictures.

Mom's 60th B-day Bash Cake

So, we've got Mom's Birthday cake here that I'm sure you have all seen already, but here you go anyway...

The only direction I was given was that Mom's favorite color was purple and that she liked tulips. So this was the result. Well, the cake was VERY purple and the tulips didn't even look like tulips. I ruffled the edges way too much. I was also curious to see what the stripes would have looked like if they were silver instead of gold. The bottom tier was a square turned out nicely but I didn't like it once I put the top tier on. The top tier is a 9 inch (I should haved done 8 inch) round. I had major issues trying to fondant the top tier so I ended up having to cut strips and put it on the way I did because the fondant kept ripping when I tried to cover it. I used Wilton's cutter to make the strips and I just used their embosser tool to put on the stitching detail on each strip. I rolled fondant for the borders and after they were placed on the cake, I painted them with a gold luster dust and vodka mixture. (don't worry, the alcohol evaporates) I also hand painted the stripes and bow gold as well.

There were 14 flowers on top as a tribute to mom having 14 children. The top tier was white cake with a rasberry/amaretto buttercream filling and the second tier was chocolate fudge with an Amaretto buttercream filling.
